Publication Announcement
I’m honored to report that one of my poems has been published in The Pharos, the quarterly peer-reviewed medical humanities journal of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
I was inducted into the honor medical society in 1989 as a medical student at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. I remain a lifetime member of AOA.
The poem, Automaticity, describes an intrinsic heart function, which is the property of the specialized conductive muscle cells of the heart to generate spontaneous cardiac action potentials that lead to cardiac activity, better known to lay persons as a “heartbeat”.
That scientific mumbo-jumbo describes the pure magic I experienced as a medical student, feeling a surgically-stilled heart leap back to life while cradled in my hands.
Are you jaded, or do you still feel wonder and awe when practical events with simple practical explanations occur?
