What is Domestic Violence [Intimate Partner Violence-IPV]?
Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. It includes physical violence, sexual violence, psychological violence, and emotional abuse. The frequency and severity of domestic violence can vary dramatically; however, the one constant component of domestic violence is one partner’s consistent efforts to maintain power and control over the other. To commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness month, I have elected to release my newest poetry book on October 1st.
FAMILY TREASONS is a treatise on the perils of abuse, whether physical, emotional, or sexual, at the hands of a parent, a spouse, or another relative, a one-time event, or an ongoing trial. These events are often publicly labeled as shameless, nameless, and blameless.
While those who perpetrated such evils are not guileless, they certainly dealt with their own demons: a narcissistic personality disorder enmeshed with a bipolar disorder, an obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, alcoholism, and/or polysubstance abuse. This is not to exonerate them but as a recognition of the complex cycle of abuse.
Some of the culprits are pictured: living individuals are not identified; dead souls are acknowledged only by their forenames [parents excepted].
