Memorial Day

“In our observances this Memorial Day, we honor the brave Americans who paid the highest price for their commitment to the ideals of peace, freedom, and justice. Our debt to them can be paid only by our own recommitment to preserving those same ideals.” — President Ronald Reagan

The United States has been honoring those killed in battle since after the Civil War. The History Channel describes the saga of what was originally called Decoration Day and is now known as Memorial Day.

While Americans enjoy an extra day off of work that is traditionally celebrated with family gatherings, cookouts and sometimes spring yard cleanups/plantings, let us remember the real reason for the holiday.
