Colonoscopy Prep (PSA)

Stuck at Home

I’m confined to home undergoing the standard colonoscopy prep.

Prohibited Foods

Over the last week, I’ve been unable to eat of some of my favorite foods: red meat, cheese, salads, fresh fruit, veggies, nuts, and multigrain breads. Don’t want any retained pieces or parts to muddy the view.

Clear Liquid Diet

Today, my repast is restricted to clear liquids. Boring!

Gatorade and Miralax

I have plenty to drink with the dreaded bowel prep regime of Gatorade (which I detest) and Miralax. Lots of nasty, salty, sweet fluid to chug, hour after hour.

Zofran

My gastroenterologist makes this ordeal a little easier by prescribing Ondansetron (Zofran), an anti-nausea medicine.

Laxative

There are also a couple doses of a laxative to get things going.

Drinking Through a Straw

To facilitate the medicated fluid intake, refrigerate the mix and drink it through a straw. Does it help? Shrug.

Facilitating a Bowel Prep

I’m ready for the torrential onslaught with comfy elastic-waist pants and a bathroom stocked with soft toilet paper, wet wipes, and soothing creams. Let the games begin!

Adequate Colon Prep

As unpleasant as the preparation may be, it is crucial to completely clear the colon to give the surgeon a crystal-clear view of the entire colon.

Colon Cancer Risk Factors

Have you had your recommended preventive colon screening? If you or your family members have a history of colon cancer, the procedure can be life-saving if a polyp or early tumor is discovered and removed. The colonoscopy itself is a breeze, thanks to anesthetic sedatives. Just do it!

The Throne

Talk to you later, have to run…
